The New Girl and Her Gifts
November 27, 2017
It’s been a busy couple of months with our Mr. Rightbank event, an amazing Veronica Beard Trunk show and the Thanksgiving holiday that we just passed. During that time, K. Renee found another extraordinary team member to add to our mix and I am excited to have you learn a little bit more about her.
Emily Powell began her style journey with K. Renee at the beginning of October (shame on me for letting two months go by!) Her role with us is multifaceted. Emily assists with our social media branding and visual merchandising (helping us make both our clothing and home store beautiful) as well as works on event planning. She also has a fashion background so you will also find her styling clients in the clothing store.
She brings a fresh energy to our team and we are so happy to have her on board. Last week, I asked Emily to answer a few questions about herself. And because it is the beginning of the holiday shopping season, I also asked her to share with you her top five gift ideas.
MEET EMILY POWELL
Julie: Emily, tell us a little bit about your style background.
Emily: Well, I grew up in a small town called Martensdale and attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Apparel, Event Management, and PR.
After college, I began pursuing my passion for styling specifically the creative design and floral aspect of events and I began freelance prop and wardrobe styling for local photographers creating “style shoots”.

When my first collaboration of a styled shoot was featured on the cover of a magazine I realized this was something I could actually do!
At one of my past jobs, I was in charge of creating daily content for Instagram and Facebook and was able to see how this effort grew the brand and company. I found how truly passionate I was about creating a brand voice and image as well as engaging with customers. This is something I’m so excited to continue to work on and grow with K.Renee! With all of the beautiful things between the home and clothing stores, the opportunities are truly endless!
Julie: And tell us a little bit about yourself personally.
Emily: I live in a Beaverdale brick with my husband Breighen, who is on the Des Moines Fire Department, and our Great Dane Kobe!
We love to spend time with our family and friends, travel around the world and exploring our favorite city- Des Moines. Since we bought our first house in 2014 my style has always been evolving and changing but I consistently am drawn to a modern bohemian style that’s inspired by beautiful spaces and places I’ve seen on my travels.
Think white walls with neutral furniture but pops of colors in pillows, rugs, throws and artwork. This bohemian style is also apparent in my wardrobe, I love easy flowy pieces that are special and interesting, I always seem to be drawn to pieces that have an extra detail whether this be through embroidery or embellishment.
Julie: Since we constantly talk about our “one thing” being style. What does that mean to you?
Emily: Style to me is a way that somebody is able to express themselves whether that be through their clothes and their home.
Everyone has their taste or specific items they’re drawn to and it’s fun for me as a stylist to work with so many different personalities on a daily basis and see what items people love or what works with their lifestyles.
One of my favorite aspects of event design is creating a beautifully styled lounge space with a creative backdrop, that’s Instagram-worthy (of course.) The opportunity to work on styling homes is so fun because you get to create this amazing space that isn’t just for a photo, our customers get to wake up and see their space every day and that to me is so rewarding!
Julie: Okay, Emily, the pressure is on! What are your top five picks for holiday gifts this season?
Emily: It’s really hard to just pick 5 things. I would say my top pick would be a room transformation because it’s hard to just pick just a few of the fabulous home items that we have.

#1 Baobou Candle Collection
But if you can’t give a full room transformation then one of my favorites would be these amazing candles. These candles are a work of art, and they smell divine and this special gift would be perfect for anyone on your list!
#2 Velvet Dress
I love this velvet blue dress. It’s so versatile. Just throw a sweater over it and wear it as a skirt; wear it to your next holiday party with a furry jacket or layer a tee under it and make it casual. A great piece that any woman would love to receive (and that furry jacket too.)
These particular booties are so comfortable and I love that they’re an olive suede which makes them different yet a great neutral, plus they’re Aquatalia so they will last forever!
#4 Throw Blankets
Who doesn't want one? A great way to add some texture and some coziness is with this amazing throw which will easily beautify any space whether it be bedroom or living room

#5 Something Sparkly
Most woman will appreciate a little sparkle. The pieces that we currently have in the store are showstoppers. We have lots and lots of great jewelry and belts options that are an easy addition to most anyone's wardrobe...but this collection that I've pulled together are some of my favorites!
Julie: Love all your picks! Any last words…
Emily: Working at K.Renee is unlike any other retail environment I’ve worked in or been to. It really is special, everything is so curated and beautiful and all of the people are so incredibly genuine and truly want to help our customers achieve a beautiful wardrobe and home and I think it’s so amazing. I feel so lucky to be a part of this newfound family and I can’t wait to keep growing with them and learning and to meet all of you!
And I can’t wait for you to meet Emily as well. She is as nice as she is beautiful! Two last things to mention. The first is our upcoming Holiday Home Transformation Giveaway.
We are taking nominations for another week and we would love to hear from you if you know of a deserving person or family that would benefit from a fresh start in their home. All you need to do to make a nomination is email us (email@example.com) a 200-500 word essay about this person or family and why you believe we can make a difference in their transformation journey.
The second is a special series of events that we have created for those of you who have interest developing your own home styling skills. We call this series, K. Renee's School of Styling. We will have six sessions on different topics to be held over the next 12 months.
Our first workshop, "One Room, Three Ways" will be held on Thursday, December 7th! And to celebrate the kick-off of our School of Styling, we will be giving away a beautiful chair. All you need to do is register for event (must be present to win) and then one of the following two: 1) Sign up to follow our blog (link) if you are not already or 2) Follow us on Instagram at (link.)
I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving holiday. Let’s enjoy this last week of November!
