6 Quick Lifts (To Spark a Little Joy)

October 19, 2020

The season has clearly turned! And I don't know about you, but I am not quite ready to spend even more time at home due to inclement weather. But alas, that certainly lies ahead.  And we need to make the best of it!!!

Several research studies indicate that 2020 is one of the saddest year that we have experienced. I don't like that at all! Which makes it even more important to focus on the immediate things that we can count on for a quick lift of spirit.

Small things are not unimportant these days. The shift of a season has a direct correlation to our change in energy and sometimes decreased moods. So, several little sparks of joy can fuel an entire day! We have to purposefully focus our time and energy on doing all that we can to boost our moods and energize our soul.

1. First things first, "are you okay?"

It is an easy and meaningful question to ask. We all just have to take more time to reach out to those around us. You know the phrase, "out of sight, out of mind?"  Right now, this is a not-so-good phrase and a bad habit to let happen. If you haven't talked to someone in a while, reach out. Don't wait for them to call you. It will matter!

Share a funny video, joke, touch base, and ask that very simple question, "are you okay?"  Mark Twain once wrote, "The best way to cheer yourself is to cheer somebody else up."

2. Think about what you can do to make fall and winter better

What will make your home more joyful, cozy and epic? It could be as easy as adding a new throw to wrap around yourself or changing up your pillows.

Or furnishing a room, so you truly love spending time in it, or it becomes more usable for small gatherings. This will be so important as we head back indoors for several months! We are home more, and this is the time to make it special and inspiring.

How about creating some fun fall decor that you can make yourself on a lazy weekend afternoon? Last weekend, Kelli showed me a picture of some adorable velvet pumpkins. Of course, I think I can do anything, so I told her I would whip some up over the weekend. (I need projects to keep me busy, how about you?) I found this super easy tutorial on YouTube.https://youtu.be/uGkPxFLHGyM)

After watching, I made a quick trip to the fabric store, and I was in business.

Making them was as easy as it looks, and was a satisfying way to spend a day indoors.

3. Wear something fabulous

I know it can be darn right challenging to find the motivation to dress up. But I promise you will feel more alive, confident, and energetic if you do! It is proven that primping and prepping ourselves for the day elevates our mood.

It's time to put away summer clothes and pull out fall sweaters, turtlenecks, boots, leggings, and all that good stuff. I am not quite ready to pull out a winter coat this time of year, which makes a great blazer a wardrobe must! Blazers are perfect with a simple top and jeans!

I am particularly fond of turtlenecks in the Fall and Winter. The warmth they provide is unbeatable, and I love how they frame our faces.   Finding that perfect new fall wardrobe enhancers can do a lot to lift your spirits!

4. Set an easy-to-achieve goal (and complete it.)

Find something to tackle that has a definitive and satisfying ending! If you are like me, you probably have many goals for your home...whether that is cleaning out a pantry or closet. Organizing old photos in the basement (on my list) or finding a new inspired bedding story for your master. These are all things that can be accomplished in a day!

You will get a good feeling and a surge of energy, having tackled something and finishing it!

5. Engage your senses

Indulge in a little eye candy. An accessory or artwork for your home that makes your heart beat fast.

Or even better, something that smells wonderful. More often than not, when clients walk into our showroom, they immediately respond to the beautiful scent. Why not have that same experience when you walk into your own home?

We even have a wonderful pumpkin chai scent for the season!

6. Snuggle up with a furry friend

An instant pick up is to spend time snuggling with our furry friends. You are probably seeing a flurry of social media posts introducing a household's new puppy or kitten. It just seems natural as we have more time at home. And yes, I am among this group that has added a new puppy to my household. It has been such a blessing. And an excellent reason to be home more!

We are all hungry for snuggles and touch, aren't we? And as an added benefit, our pets are the perfect excuse to bundle up and go outside for a walk!

No matter how bored I am, when this little guy curls up in my lap, I experience such a spark of joy. Even if you don't have one of your own, I bet you know someone who does, who wouldn't mind sharing some puppy (or kitty) love with you. I promise you'll smile.

Stay warm out there! Hopefully, we will have another spurt of warm weather but one thing I know for sure...Winter is coming! But I am not going to let it get me down, how about you?
