Frank's Theme: Summertime and the Livin' is Easy
June 23, 2017
Last weekend it finally happened. My spouse (yikes, that sounds so formal)..my husband Tim and I took a short road trip that cemented the summer spirit in me. We were driving in my little Mini Cooper roadster convertible north on Interstate 35 and I’m at the wheel.
It’s 87 or maybe 90 degrees, sunny and clear, and windier than Chicago’s lakefront. The top is down. We’re covered in sunscreen...me not a high enough SPF, Tim at a sensible 30. Our hair is whipping around. I’m wearing shorts and a tank top. Doesn’t get much better for me. It’s s-u-m-m-e-r!!
You’ve got to know that I hate w-i-n-t-e-r anywhere in planting zones less than number 8 or 9 . For the record, most of Iowa is in Zone #5. Brrrrrrr. Just thinking about it brings my shoulders way up to my ear lobes. I have unending gratitude for the inventor of soft, warm neck scarves.
Yes, it is summer 2017. Time to take our lives a little easier. Relax even. Start now...deep breath in, hold, let it out. Repeat as much as you like and as often as you like. Amazing right?
Let’s take this summer ease in a different direction. Think about how we dress ourselves during this glorious time of the year. If you’re like me, a month or so ago, you moved the wools and heavy clothing and shoes to the back of your closet or to the “transition” clothing rack in the basement. Some of you might have the luxury of just closing (for a few months) one closet door and unlocking the other. I’m envious. Whatever process you use, let me ask you this...is that summer wardrobe of yours looking a little tired, or so 2016, or 2015, ‘14, ‘12, ‘10? Well, my friends, if that’s the case it’s time to breathe some fresh air not only physiologically (see above instructions) but also by purging the old clothes and shoes and adding refreshing new pieces.
Hold on to that thought while I digress a bit, or for you theatrical types do an “aside”. Purging doesn’t have to mean throw out. There are a number of social service organizations and temporary housing facilities, yes “shelters”, that would really appreciate your castaways. Google will help you find them...or just get a hold of me.
Okay, back to your summer clothes. I’m going to offer a few ways to breeze through the next few months with style and no sweat. Well, I can’t in all honesty promise the literal “no sweat” part of my previous sentence.
WHITE! To me, there is no better way to look and feel like you embrace summer than wearing white. There are so many opportunities whether the occasion is dressy or backyard casual.
Options? Here at the store, we love our blouses, tees, pants, jeans, dresses, skirts, jackets, suits, jewelry, sneakers. Many are cotton. Crisp and bright, embellished, crocheted or architectural. And then there’s linen. I get that some of you aren’t wild about how it wrinkles, but that’s the beauty of it. The summer ease we’re talking about.
BLACK & WHITE I can’t think of a more classic, chic color combo than B&W. Consider the timelessness of the men’s tuxedos. The Yin and the Yang of fashion maybe, but what a striking duo.
Has there ever been a more versatile color coupling? Not much more I can say about this so I’m taking advantage of the “a picture is worth a thousand words” cliche. Enjoy and be inspired to pair your own black and white pieces.
NAVY You won’t hear me saying navy is the new black, but this dark color holds its own Navy can be festive, somber, playful, moody, and the throw off some attitude in the boardroom when it needs to. Which of these adaptations speaks to you?
BRIGHT COLORS I tempt you to pop a bit of it or OWN it! Brights and prints will stand out in your closet and put a smile on your face and jaunt to your step each time you wear them. But don’t take my word for it...see for yourself for what the vibrancy of color does for you and your day! Selfies sent to me welcome.
It’s been awhile since I’ve penned a “Light of Style” blog for Julie. It feels good to share with you how bonkers I get about both summer and summer clothes. Each season, I get to hang with fun clothing and shoes, allowing me the opportunity to style our wonderful clients each day I’m at work. The absolute best part is seeing the smile on your face when you leave the store loving the looks we put together for your updated summer wardrobe.
I can’t wait to see you out and about. I won’t be surprised if you’re humming the tune to “Summertime, and living is easy”.
PS. Our clothing store is starting its SALE on spring apparel and shoes tomorrow. Those of you who are reading our blog are some of the first to know! I'm working today and would love to see you.
