Traveling is always a bit of an ordeal for me. I am not great about packing light - but since I am only going for 48 hours, I am holding myself to a carry on bag. Okay, I know some of you can pack for a week in one of those Barbie bags but for me it is a challenge! I like to have options.
For this type of travel, I like to pack layers. A maxi dress (1 - by Allen Allen)
, a pair of shorts (3 - by Theory)
, one pair of flats, one pair of heels, layering shirts (2 & 5 - both from Vince)
and my secret weapon. one good Suzie Roher belt (6)!
With this small assortment of great pieces, I was armed with enough options for our jam-packed weekend of dreaming, decorating, meeting new friends & family, and having a few adventures along the way. My 48 hours went something like this.
Checked into the Palomar Hotel at 4 pm on Friday, July 4th
I asked Brandon for a recommendation on a hotel close to his new place. He suggested the Palomar Hotel
. I could not have been happier with this contemporary and cosmopolitan yet comfortable and welcoming boutique hotel in downtown Phoenix. Highly recommended!
5 pm, Friday, July 4th
After dropping off my luggage, it was time to check out Brandon and Erin's new 2 story urban condominium.
Its high ceilings, natural wood floors, spacious layout, and gourmet kitchen all make it a perfect home for such a young and fun couple!
Before family and friends arrived for the 4th of July feast Erin prepared, we measured the windows, walls and doors of their living room so I could do a quick rendering of how we might lay out and furnish the living room.
7 pm, Friday, July 4th
The rest of the evening was spent enjoying great food, champagne and getting to know family and friends that I hadn't had an opportunity to meet. We capped off our evening by wandering around the art district in downtown Phoenix. It was a fun way to end the night and a great thing to put on your list if you are in the area!
11 am, Saturday, July 5th
After a quiet morning enjoying my new favorite hotel, the kids picked me up and we headed toward the mountains where Erin's parents have a beautiful second home in Munds Park, Arizona. It was a balmy 98 and rising in Phoenix when we left town. In the mountains only an hour and a half away, the temperature would be in the 70's!
12:30 pm, Saturday, July 5th
Of course, we needed to have an adventure on our way to the cabin, so Brandon decided that the "largest ghost town in America"
in Jerome, Arizona would be the perfect lunch stop. Lots of fun restaurants and shops kept us busy for a few hours and the views were breathtaking.
3:00 pm, Saturday, July 5th
After seeing the beautiful and diverse landscape of Arizona, we arrived at the family cabin. The location and home were absolutely stunning. Thank you Karen and Kevin (Erin's parents) for having me!
7:30 pm, Saturday July 5th
After settling in at the cabin, we headed north another 15 miles to Flagstaff to have dinner at the Tinderbox Kitchen. And yes, I went out on a limb and order "Braised Hog Jowls". Despite my trepidation... It was really quite delicious and again, highly recommended.
10:00 am, Sunday, July 6th
After a restful night at the cabin, I awoke to the smell of bacon and freshly made quiche. Karen had gone all out preparing a breakfast for champions and sent us back to Phoenix relaxed, recharged, and well fed!
12:00 pm, Sunday, July 6th
It was time to get back to Phoenix to talk through the final plans for Brandon and Erin's urban living room. A couple of weeks ago, they were in Des Moines and had a chance to pick out a few favorite pieces at the store. They selected items from our Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams
collection which actually works great because these pieces can be shipped directly (White Glove Service)
to Brandon and Erin's home. Perfect!
This is what we came up with.
We are going to use their existing white washed media cabinet that works great with their desire of a relaxed, comfortable and modern look. 2) The Franco sectional offers lots of comfort and seating for entertaining especially with the ottoman that can be broken away for additional seating. 3) The Cara Tall back chairs made the cut with this bold graphic pattern. 4) Erin liked the idea of accenting their neutral palette with a pop of bold marigold yellow in the pillows and Rocco ottomans. I like the idea too! 5) And I suggested the bold and beautiful Vega coffee table in polished steel to really add a bit of drama to their living room. Love it!
Ahhh... A great, productive and fun weekend! I caught an early evening flight home last night and am back in the store today!
Looking back on the weekend, I can't believe how much we accomplished in two days and how much I enjoyed spending time with the kids and all the people that are so important to them in their Arizona life.
Thank you Brandon and Erin! I promise I will be back sooner than later!
