A Simple Way to Create Big Impact
February 24, 2014
Happy Monday morning. Is it spring yet? Afraid not!
As promised, the next few blogs are going to be devoted to some easy actions that you can take to update your space. If you want to make big impact without making permanent changes, the place to start might be adding or changing an area rug.
Candice Olson says this about using her rug collection…
"I simply love classic design when it’s reinterpreted. These collections reflect the spirit of this design philosophy; clean pared down lines and forms rooted in tradition yet made to feel new and modern with unexpected or stylized scale, finishes and detailing. This contemporary take on tradition creates a look that’s at once current yet timeless, fresh yet familiar…the essence of both beautiful design and a beautifully designed home."
Years ago, I remember searching high and low for area rugs that I really like and ended up with something like this:
Many of us with traditional homes have had a rug like this at one time or another.
It wasn’t so much that I really liked this style of rug but more that it was the best of what I could find at the time. The good news is that we invest lots of time at market searching for new beautiful alternatives to give you more updated area rug options! Our rugs are not only stylish and comfortable but affordable and durable.
Just a few of the many beautiful rugs we carry at K. Renee Home.
An area rug can help you define and frame different spaces within your home. They add texture, pattern and can add a hint of modern to a traditional space allowing you to bring in accessories to support a transitional look.
One of the most frequent questions that we get asked at the home store is “Can I put an area rug on carpet?” The answer is a big “Yes!” Kelli loves the additional layering element that a textured or patterned rug brings to a room (especially with existing carpet) and often uses an area rug to define a seating area or to draw attention to an important focal area.
This is a great example of a patterned area rug on carpet framing a seating area. It looks amazing!
What size is best for you? We typically find that an 8’ by 11’ or a 9′ by 13′ does the trick in a large space allowing the central items of your furniture (sofa, coffee table, side chairs) to be linked together.
You can also use a smaller rug (5’ by 8’) a number of different ways including running it at an angle which allows you to add another layer to your room story.
The smaller rug just brings another much needed layer and warmth to this room.
You might be saying to yourself, ‘I don’t need a new rug. I already have a perfectly good one at home.’ But here is where I will challenge you and ask: Do you love the rug? Or are you just working around it? You have to decide what is really working for your home and what you want to accomplish. And besides, there are a lot of uses for a rug you just don’t love.
- Option one – Move an older rug to your garage or an unfinished basement area. I love having a rug down in an open area of the garage especially in the winter. It becomes the place to leave snow boots or shoes.
- Option two – Take unwanted items to a consignment shop. I never had the heart to invest in a really pricey rug although I know some of you have. If that is the case, we know some great places that are ready, willing and able to sell it for you.
- Option three – You can always donate a rug in good shape. There are lots of places like The House of Mercy that are in the business of helping families get back on their feet. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated.
Until next week, when we will be talking about the fine art of accessorizing! In the meantime, mark your calendar for a couple of great events coming up at K. Renee and K. Renee Home.
The first is Thursday, March 6 through Saturday, March 8. Our clothing store will be hosting a trunk show for my absolutely favorite designer brand this year, Rachel Zoe.
The trunk show will feature spring and summer collections and you won’t want to miss a chance to see the effortless glamour of her collection!
The second date to mark is the evening of Thursday, March 27. We will be showing off K. Renee Home’s new showroom space by hosting an interactive seminar “One room, Three Ways”. Kelli and team will be layering and accessorizing one furniture set – three different ways while our guest participants enjoy a glass of wine. It will be a great opportunity to watch and learn how you might style your own room. Space will be limited to 20 guests. Details will follow in the next few weeks on how to reserve your spot at this fun event!
